Definition :
Standard time is the total time in which a job should be completed at standard performance. The unit that measures the number of minutes an operator must work on an operation (Solinger, 1980).
Standard time is the time required by a worker with standard experience to complete a given task while working at a sustained pace for an entire workday under normal working conditions and work procedures. Standard Time thus consists of the following elements.
Uses for Standard allowed minute (SAM) :
Modern management techniques are highly dependent on timing. The "time" factor can be used as follows.
(a) Making a logical plan
(b) A reference point for considering product supply
(c) A tool for developing a production plan
(d) Determining the price of a suitable product
(e) A reference point for labor cost negotiations
(f) Another factor in calculating profit/loss
(g) Improving productivity
(h) Discovering problems and areas for improvement in work flow, including work with bottlenecks and excessive waste, inefficient procedures and inconsistencies.
(i) Comparing the time and movements required by two or more operators performing the same task to discover areas for improvement.
(j) To check the effect of improving the work based on the time required.
(k) As time information for process design
(l) Determining the operator's skill level
Process to reach SAM :
• Estimate work
• Past experience
• Stop reading the clock and time
• PMTS
