Overlocking Machine Parts and Their Functions:
The parts of the overedge machine and their functions are defined here. Only those that differ substantially from the lockstitch machine are discussed.
• Differential feed: A feeding device with two separate feeds, one in front of the other, which increases the amount of fabric fed into the stitches for shirring and decreases the amount for stretch knits.
• Differential feed regulator: The device that regu- lates the feed in front of the presser foot.
• Dummy needle: A needle without an eye that is used on the coverstitch machine to aid the formation of stitches.
• Feed dog: The toothed mechanism beneath the presser foot that moves fabric forward and backward.
• Knives: The parts of the machine that trim the fabric edge just before stitching. The lower knife is stationary, while the upper knife moves up and down.
• Lower looper: The looper that carries the thread under the needle plate.
• Presser bar lifter: A hand lever at the back or side of the presser bar that is used to raise the
presser foot and swing it to the side. It is used to raise the presser foot when threading the machine.
• Presser foot: A device that holds the fabric in place for stitching and regulates the stitch width.
• Presser foot lifter: A small treadle located to the right of the primary treadle that is used to raise the presser foot. The presser foot lifter allows the operator to lift the foot quickly and easily; and it frees the hands so the operator can arrange the fabric parts.
• Spreader: A device that holds and opens the thread loop but does not carry thread.
• Stitch length regulator: A device that regulates the stitch length.
• Thread finger or stitch tongue: A part on the presser foot that regulates the width of the stitch.
• Upper looper: The looper that carries the thread over the needle plate.
• Width selection knob: A device used in coordi- nation with the thread finger to regulate the width of the stitch.
